Effect of Emission

Posted by | Business | No Comments

The Blame Game should be over by 2030. Yes; United States and other economies were blamed for releasing harmful chemicals in the atmosphere and as having a major hand in the ‘Greenhouse Effect’. Consequently many steps have been taken to counter the effects. Also depletion of many natural resources almost forced the nations to adopt to a more cleaner and renewable resource. Residents of United States were always fearful of a change in lifestyle in the process of changing for a better environment.

According to a recent study by McKinsey has researched on the cost of reducing the emission. The United States could reduce the projected emission by 2030 without a major change in the lifestyle but only by adopting to a more cleaner and better option. The United States economy. It has also found out that 80% of such a change could be done from technologies already proven in the United States or elsewhere in the economy.

Thus a major change in lifestyle or a huge cost incurrance should not be a problem for United States to start transforming itself. Meantime I feel that such a report is only a boon for countries like India, who are on the fast track of development to adopt greener technologies initially such that a major transformation and cost incurrance could be avoided to a large extent. So start thinking and find out what can be done to change your lifestyle such a more secure and greener environment is given to our future.

Internet Search Engine has come out with a mapping system that uses Cell Phone towers to intimate mobile users to find out about services that is nearest to them, called as ‘My Location’. Google is offering this service free of cost right now. The service is also independent of carriers.

Google Maps for mobile with the help of ‘My Location’ that automatically informs users about the place they are in. Users just need to type ‘o’ in their mobile to activate the serivce. The application traces out the approx location of the user and the nearest Cell Towers and provides the informations required.

As of now, the service is free but soon local advertising will come into play with the user of ‘My Location’. Google some time back was concentrating on internet advertising, now it has shifted its focus on Mobile users and advertising through mobile, a very good Strategic Business Planning.

The Journey of Facebook

Startups, what do they have in common apart form a great brainwave, for one it is great team effort, the other is the belief in the Product and belief in oneself; this is what is attributed to ‘Facebook’ founded by Mark Zuckerberg.

An article by Fred Vogelstein titled ‘Facebook’ in ‘Wired’ traces the journey of Facebook and its founder Zuckerberg from its inception to its present day. Vogelstein starts of with the story of young Mark Zuckerberg who wanted a social site to connect friends and which proved to be a revolution in itself. Unlike other sites ‘Facebook’ wanted to reach out to friends and colleagues who were known to each other well enough for a peek into their activities and life. Facebook did not intend to connect unknown people and hence information for one was available for everyone in the group to see. Well Mark and his colleagues decided to add that little something into ‘Facebook’ which seems to be in rage in 2006; the outcome was ‘Newsfeed’ where an addition to a members activity would be known to everyone in the group automatically as it was updated and this seems to to do the trick. Well by now everyone wanted ‘Facebook’ and hence its value had soared and like other bidders Yahoo had offered a proposal of $1 billion in cash. But what happened was that the timing, as Yahoo itself was going through a case of slower growth and sales through advertisements were all time low and hence Terry Sebel(the then CEO of Yahoo) reduced the price from $1 billion to that of $800 million; but Mark Zuckerberg wouldn’t accept and just turned down the offer and refused to renegotiate even when Sebel increased the price back to $1 billion; many thought that Zuckerberg was doing a grave mistake, well everyone else were mistaken!

The story goes like this by early 2007 Zuckerberg had decided to open ‘Facebook’ to the highschool community and soon the membership soared to 14million from 8 million in 2006. The major setback was that while students both in Highschool and college enjoyed using Facebook to connect, sadly they had to log off when they needed to do other stuffs like check the auction price at ebay or something like that. Well for one Facebooks employee couldnt handle the responsibility of developing a platform on everyone’s likes because it might be too large to do handle, so the next best option which Zuckerberg opeted was to to open Facebook to Independent developers so that applications which suited individuals could be devleoped, this was done in May of this year. Not only that Developers could charge for their wares and collected revenues. This does make ‘Facebook’ the most sought after platform.

But all said and done Vogelstein does observe that there is no killer application for facebook yet which could land it on top! If it could be developed there is no stopping for “Facebook”

I completely relate to Mark Zuckerberg and his willingness to show courage under extreme pressure, afterall it is these characters that helps us to stand apart!

After Effects.

After my post on Black Friday, it became necessary for me to check on the after effects of the same. So started my scanning for the major reports coming from the U.S regarding the effect of the shopping season. The result seems to be mixed and was not very very bright.

My most reliable source was obviously ‘Reuters’ and according to the reports the shares saw a uphill on Friday, but it soon waned on Monday with the Dow Jones closing about 2% lower. Friday did seem to see an increase in the shoppers but what about the shopping itself; well here is some report from NRF or the National Retail Federation which shows that there were 4.8% more shoppers but each spent around 3.5% lesser so the picture was not rosy infact it is same as it was last year!

Wherase reports from Shoppers Trak seems to report that sales itself rose to about 8.3% higher, and sales is expected to increase about 3.6% higher in the holiday season. Like mentioned earlier attractive deals had attracted shoppers far and wide but worries are looming over, as the retailers might have cut down on profit or there might be a lean demand later which dosent look very encouraging. Well the weekend might have gone on good as anticipated but the after effects are still to be felt!

Stealth

The F-117A Nighthawk stealth aircraft, left many gaping mouth open-wide, when it was first unveiled for Public Viewing in 1980. Jonathan Skillings of CNET news has described the Aircraft in detail and its history in the coloumn titled “A brief History of the Stealth Aircraft’. Here are some of his observations and what I think about the aircraft.

The Stealth aircraft was used during the Cold War between U.S.A and (then) U.S.S.R
and was quite futuristic in its capabilities and in its desigs. Triangles and Trapezoids seems to be the major shapes for the design. Even now I feel that it is one of those things that can be described as majestic and commanding in looks and delivery. Well as of now the Stealth seems to be a feast to many eyes as it flies during the many Air Shows conducted in Mexico or Dubai.

‘A Model ofthe F-117A Nighthawk stealth, this particular model has a special place on my Desktop’

It seems the designs were chosen such a way that it enabled the Aircraft to hide on the sky both physically and from the Radar’s reach. The F-117A might be replaced by a more sophisticated and high end technology aircraft but nothing can take that ‘impact’ that it created and still creates among the Aircraft enthusiast. Due for retirement, the Aircraft still stands with all its regalness in the U.S Airforce.

Be Thankful!

Doorbusters sale, limited time sales are something which people look forward to for the Christmas Season. The official shopping season is expected to start on Black Friday or the day after the Thanksgiving Thursday. But due to the condition of the economy retailers feared for drop in the shopping spree and had offered discounts online. Great names like that of Wal-mart, Best Buys and JCPenny have put advertisements for great discounts, Midnight Madness and even wake up alams forDoorbusters sale. The sites have been seeing a record number of people visiting for the discounts and the retailers seem to be happy.

The question is can such a shopping spree lift the spirit of the people and the investment population in general? well it is to be seen after Friday, but the increase the number of people on the various retailers site and that of the increase in shoppers a little early on Thursday itself is a positive sign.

Guess the Holiday season was not so damp as figured out to be and one has to see the increase in the shoppers and what it does to the morale of the population itself?

Paulsons Comments.

In an interview given to The Wall Street Journal, U.S Treasury Secretary Henry Pauylson observed that the number of home-loan defaulters in the U.S could possibly go up in the year 2008. He observered that the number of defaulters might rise next year than it was in 2007, because “2006 mortgages had lower underwriting standards, no amortization and no down payments” Paulson was trying to help the Industry by making a large section of borrowers eligible for better loans instead of tackling individual cases. Now it is believed that Paulsons comments could have been the reason for the dollar to fall a two year low against the yen on Wednesday!

U.S is trying hard to tackle its home-loan mortgage which has become a case of major concern to the economy.
